British singer-songwriter and producer Henry Green has been quietly building his delicate, folk-flavored sound ever since he surprised us with a stripped back cover of MGMT’s ‘Electric Feel’ over three years ago. Currently approaching two million plays on Soundcloud, it obviously resonated with a lot of people. But it’s really no wonder when you consider Green’s acute sense of musicality and ability to stir up so much emotion in a single song.
On his EP Slow which was released summer of last year, he developed this style even further. Still opting for minimal, guitar-driven compositions, Green also incorporated lo-fi electronic elements that were subtle enough to never detract from the project’s organic feel. ‘Barcelona’, the EP’s standout track, reached the top 10 on Hype Machine and is invariably one of the Englishman’s best.
After a long wait however, Green is back with ‘Closer‘, the first single off his upcoming EP Real set to be released through Akira Records. While the fragility of his sound remains, Green feels more at ease here. The mood is a little lighter, the instrumentation a little breezier.
It’s easy to close your eyes and float away to this one, imagining you’re about to set sail on a cool, clear-skied day. In a world of music ADHD, the British singer may not be the loudest but is bound to reel in a few wandering souls who are looking for an escape from all of the noise. Definitely keep an eye out for his new project if you like what you hear.
