Dancing is strongly recommended if not unavoidable when listening to the latest tracks from SOFI TUKKER. Today the beats are electric and the groove has grown to an irresistible level with the electro-pop duo’s release of their debut EP “Soft Animals”.

The band name is inspired by the names of the two members Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern. SOFI TUKKER – This all-caps neologism highlights a certain grooviness about the electro-pop group guaranteed to draw you into some sort of where-the-wild-things-are dance arena.

“Awoo” – the track title of their latest single – promises fun times as the pair continue to build on their expansive electronic sound. Featuring the band’s close friend Betta Lemme, the track finds a hypnotic melody in a looped crescendoing synth line and syncopated drum pad beats.

“We wrote ‘Awoo’ with our friend, Betta Lemme, when we were all hanging out laughing by a piano, in a heightened state of goof,” SOFI TUKKER says about the single. “We have a whimsical dance to go along with it. It’s one of our favorite songs to perform live.” tweet

Indeed the piano groove is perhaps the most delightful part of their latest single from the EP.

For the most part the vocals are offered by Hawley-Weld with occasional backing from Halpern. Select effects are applied to the vocal track to create a synth like melody. Indie Underground has previously written about the duo’s combination of chanting style vocals with unique instrumentation like the Charango in “Matadora”. This blend is an alluring approach to electronic music. The most recent track on the EP, “Moon Tattoo” is a step away from chanting style vocals and offers less incantation and more James Bond style of intrigue and romance.

The beats aren’t all over the place like in most dance tracks offered by house and edm artists. Instead, because of their minimalist approach to creating beats and their use of vocals as part of the synth layering, SOFI TUKKER creates music that offers the listener clear elements from which to choose as a particular focus. That is where the fun begins.

The music video for Drinkee is excellent and encourages jungle jaunts alongside all of your favourite soft animals.

Music was everywhere when I grew up at my family house in downtown Kitchener. My dad is a musician, my mom loves to sing and I have many musical siblings. I moved to London Ontario where I work and am in my last year of English and French at Western University. My musical interests vary and I like to explore with Spotify and Youtube. I don't own a pair of #musicislife sweatpants but I should.
