I’m not sure if there’s something in the water down in Australia, but the indie scene there has grown vastly with many talented artists. Over the last few years, I’ve noticed a number of Aussies across my Soundcloud feed and indie blogs, and Gypsy & The Cat are a pair you don’t want to miss. Xavier Bacash and Lionel Towers truly became Gypsy & The Cat in 2010 with their debut LP, Gilgamesh, which found success around the globe. Their melodic sound is definitely making waves in Australia’s indie-pop scene.

“Life”, the duo’s latest single, comes straight from their up and coming album, Virtual Islands, out August 5th. The song opens with a blues-rock vibe, which definitely sets the song out from the previous singles “I Just Want To Be Somebody Else” and “Inside Your Mind”, which are more electronic. There’s something about “Life” that is very anthemic. I can already imagine myself singing “IT’S… MY LIFEEEE” on festival grounds or in front of my bedroom mirror. The sharp lyrics pull listeners in, calling out the beauty and the chaos of the world. Front-man Xavier Bacash is “most proud of this track”, and you can feel it when you listen.

Indie Underground last spotted Gypsy & The Cat in March when they kicked off their national tour at The Foundry in Melbourne, Australia after releasing “Inside Your Mind”.

I hope they play in Canada soon, but in the meantime, we will definitely be in for a treat with this album.
