Since 2012, Indie Underground has supported the up and coming indie music scene by sharing new music, videos, interviewing musicians, putting on live events, providing festival guides, concert previews, reviews, publishing music lists and directories, playlists and more!

In order to keep up with Indie Underground’s increasing number of music submissions, daily traffic, and high standards of delivering new and engaging content, we created the Indie Underground Contributor Program. The Program offers publishing opportunities for successful Contributors who are keen on improving the up-and-coming Indie Music Scene. Contributors will develop new relationships within the industry, receive assistance with writing / editing for journalistic, marketing and social sharing purposes, get monthly social sharing reports on how far their articles reached as well have opportunities to meet other Indie Underground Contributors at social events. Contributors may also gain media access to concerts in their city, festivals (ex: NXNE, Wayhome, etc).

Indie-Underground---Music-Contributor1. Music Contributor

Positions available: Canada, United States, United Kingdom

Term: Three months
(possible opportunity to continue contributing beyond this term if it makes sense for both Contributor and Indie Underground)

Position Overview:
Support Indie Underground with blogging pre-selected submissions sent in from bands, music agents, managers and the occasional fan. The contributor will also have an opportunity to suggest and blog about music that they discover on their own. The person should be a fan of the Indie Underground blogged music as well as be someone who frequently searches for new, interesting music in a variety of areas.

Role Focus:

  • 75% of new music posts will be pre-selected by Indie Underground (this includes some music premieres)
  • 25% of new music posts can come from contributor (upon approval by Indie Underground). Note: It’s possible for this percentage to increase in the future
  • Work with Aaron (Founder / Chief Editor) on the logistics of posts
  • Opportunity to further define this role with Aaron (Founder / Chief Editor)

Qualifications:

  • An avid indie music researcher
  • Previous experience as a writer is an asset
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Expert organizational and prioritization skills
  • Solid writing, proofreading, fact checking and editing skills
  • WordPress experience is an asset
  • Comfortable with Facebook groups
  • Must be motivated
  • Effective self-managing skills
  • Always hits deadlines
  • Must have access to a computer

Outcomes:

  • Gain valuable experience by researching, writing and learning about upcoming relevant bands to the indie music scene
  • Have a direct impact on the exposure and success of developing music acts
  • Get web blogging experience from using WordPress
  • Receive website credit on each blog post
  • Get a Contributor Profile on Indie Underground (photo, short biography, links to previous blog posts and personal social accounts)

Expectations: 1 post per week (minimum)

Indie-Underground---Scene-Contributor2. Scene Contributor

Positions available: London, ON, Toronto, ON

Term: Three months
(possible opportunity to continue contributing beyond this term if it makes sense for both Contributor and Indie Underground)

Position Overview:
Looking for passionate people who want to help make a difference in their city by writing about relevant music culture, inspirational and interesting articles, while providing on the ground coverage of shows and concerts with occasional media accreditation.

Role Focus:

  • Write music scene related stories (inspirational and personal experiences, scene spotlights, opinions, etc)
  • Opportunities for media accreditation to review shows and concerts
  • Write show and concert previews
  • Conduct interviews
  • Cover College and University indie music scenes
  • Work with Aaron (Founder / Chief Editor) on the logistics of each project
  • Opportunity to further define this role with Aaron (Founder / Chief Editor)

Qualifications:

  • Must be socially conscious and care about the local indie music scene and it’s supporters
  • Must be outgoing and willing to attend shows and concerts regularly
  • Must be assertive in social settings when working
  • Must be punctual, respectful, a good listener and respect authority
  • Should have experience with posting live (on-location) photos, video and broadcasts through social media
  • Experience with a DSLR is an asset
  • Must like doing research to find relevant stories and perform engaging interviews
  • Must have a positive demeanor
  • Must be a creative thinker
  • Previous experience as a writer is an asset

Indie-Underground---Photo-Video-Contributor3. Photo / Video Contributor

Positions available: London, ON, Toronto, ON, Montreal, QC

Term: Three months
(possible opportunity to continue contributing beyond this term if it makes sense for both Contributor and Indie Underground)

Position Overview:
Responsible for capturing and editing a broad range of photos and videos for various shows, concerts and festivals and musical performers.

Role Focus:

  • Opportunities for media accreditation to capture photos and video at various concerts and festivals
  • Editing (colour correcting, adding watermark) and delivering captured footage in a timely fashion after events finish
  • Capturing a broad range of content
  • Contributor will work with Aaron (Founder / Chief Editor) on the logistics of each project
  • Will work closely with the Social Engagement Contributor
  • Should have experience with posting live (on-location) photos, video and broadcasts through social media
  • Work with Aaron (Founder / Chief Editor) on the logistics of each project
  • Future opportunity to work with Scene Contributor to film live interviews
  • Opportunity to further define this role with Aaron (Founder / Chief Editor)

Qualifications: 

  • Strong technical skills in Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom
  • Experience with Adobe Premiere and After Effects is an asset
  • Must own suitable photography equipment for various types of photo and video shoots
  • High attention span and able to think on feet.
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Expert organizational and prioritization skills
  • Must be motivated

Indie-Underground---Social-Media-Contributor4. Social Engagement Contributor

Positions available: London, ON

Term: Three months
(possible opportunity to continue contributing beyond this term if it makes sense for both Contributor and Indie Underground)

Role Overview:
Create new content in social streams that entices users to like, share, comment and continue consumption of Indie Underground social content. Monitor day-to-day activity on Indie Underground social channels.

Role Focus:

  • Responsible for researching and adding a collection of new, nostalgic, scene related, non-offensive / engaging content that isn’t just featured on IndieUnderground.ca. Most content should be embedded within social channel and not feature external links (ex. acceptable content original uploaded video, memes, photography, graphics, Facebook events, polls, etc). Content should appeal to viewers to inspire them to continue to consume content from the Indie Underground social channel that they are currently using.
  • Social channels of focus are Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter and occasionally Snapchat
  • Will work closely with the Photo / Video Contributors
  • Come up with contest and giveaway ideas / suggest new partners
  • Design and create graphics, carry-out, and monitor contests and announce winners
  • Should have experience with posting live (on-location) photos, video and broadcasts through social media
  • Monitor social channels for third-party click bait posts
  • Handle social stream private messages
  • Work with Aaron (Founder / Chief Editor) on the logistics of each project
  • Monitor all social stream updates and share important changes with Aaron (Founder / Chief Editor)
  • Opportunity to further define this role with Aaron (Founder / Chief Editor)

Qualifications:

  • Experience with using social analytic software in order to gain better results
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Experience with scheduling posts with Facebook and Hootsuite
  • Basic technical skills with Google Drive
  • Strong understanding of how to correctly link and use hashtags across all relevant social streams
  • Social media planning and implementation skills
  • Must like doing research to find and create relevant and engaging content
  • Understands what content succeeds within various social streams and why
  • Excellent proofreading, editing and written communication skills (proficient at writing marketing advertisements)
  • Ability to work independently on projects or with others
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills

  • Experience with surveys and data collection.

  • Continually monitors all social streams.
  • 10 posts a week (minimum)

Indie-Underground---Playlist-Contributor5. Music Playlist Contributor

Positions available: Canada, United States, United Kingdom

Term: Three months
(possible opportunity to continue contributing beyond this term if it makes sense for both Contributor and Indie Underground)

Position Overview:
Music playlist curators are very important to modern day music discovery and exploration than ever before. This Playlist Contributor will create music playlists in a variety of easily consumable platforms that celebrate multiple genres, events, themes, festivals and emotions.

Role Focus:

  • Create various music playlists across multiple music applications, platforms and websites
  • Write blog posts to explain theme and highlights each playlist
  • Work with Aaron (Founder / Chief Editor) on the logistics of each project
  • Opportunity to further define their role with Aaron (Founder / Chief Editor)

Qualifications:

  • Must have a broad amount of knowledge of a variety of music genres
  • Must have a long history of being an indie music fan
  • Must be creative
  • Should have experience with creating user profiles and personas
  • Experience with using Spotify, Youtube, Google Play Music and other music sharing applications
  • WordPress experience is an asset

Outcomes:

  • Stay up-to-date with social streaming applications and trends
  • Have a direct impact on the exposure and success of developing music acts
  • Get web blogging experience from using WordPress
  • Receive website credit on each blog post
  • Get a Contributor Profile on Indie Underground (photo, short biography, links to previous blog posts and personal social accounts)

Expectations: 1 playlist per week (minimum)
