HSY – Toronto (Garage / Sludge)

HSYPronounced “hussy”. “Like their peers Odonis Odonis and Soupcans, local quartet HSY play a brand of stripped-down sludgy rock that brings to mind the heroes of the ’80s American underground heroes like the Jesus Lizard, Dinosaur Jr. and even the first Nirvana record. As if to hammer home their point, their drummer plays without any cymbals.” – Ian Gormely (Exclaim)

The Beverleys – Toronto (Junk Punk)

the beverelysThe Beverleys, a TKO of a trio dead set on using their impulses to make heads bang while they shake off their troubles. Their dual guitar (Joanna Lund, Susan Burke) and drum (Audrey Hammer) attack recalls the time when punk first broke— their sound is imbued with a grungy heaviness characteristic of the Toronto scene but with the sharper and more defined lines of a band too quick to get lost in the murk.

I Smell Blood – London (Noise-Punk)

I Smell BloodBorn of Lightning and Thunder comes the Noise-Punk / Rock Gods, I Smell Blood. The duo does a great job taking their music to the brink of losing control, but end up keeping a Godly-like wondrous grip through the sweat, exhaustion, blisters and blood that thrills live audiences.

Whoop-Szo – London (True-Psyche)

Whoop-szoMerely an extension of their zealous course towards enlightenment. Guilty of drive by noise interruptions; a roll, wallow and play in the shades of grey sound. 90s child vocal spats, shoegazer-fuzz, tares of delayed time, sewn together within a rural folk tapestry.

Generally abhorrent to definition they do enjoy the inner ear.
