Hoping to get your weekend off to an early start? Catch the Paper Kites and Twin Bandit at London Music Hall on Thursday, July 14 and hear stories of love and heartbreak set against a dusky backdrop of fingerstyle guitar, pedal steel, and a healthy dose of synth. This all-ages show is presented by London Music Hall and CHRW 94.9 FM.
Headlining Thursday night’s show are Melbourne, Australia’s much-loved Paper Kites. Since the release of their first EP, Woodland, in 2011, the folk-rock five-piece have been impressing international audiences with their intimate and polished live performances. Two years after joining City and Colour (who will also be in town this weekend playing Rock the Park on Saturday, July 16) on their 2013 North American tour, the Paper Kites are returning to North America in support of their latest album, twelvefour, a critically acclaimed reflection on self-indulgence, love, and the creative process. This is the Paper Kites’ first show in London, Ontario.
Kicking off the show is Vancouver’s folk-Americana duo Twin Bandit. Twin Bandit’s bluegrass roots and smooth vocal harmonies are the perfect chilled-out aperitif for the Paper Kite’s moody, synth-heavy folk rock, so be sure to arrive at the London Music Hall in time to let this duo set the tone for the rest of your Thursday evening.
The Paper Kites
Genre: Indie Folk Rock
Written entirely between midnight and 4 AM, the Paper Kites’ latest album, twelvefour, explores the notion that an artist’s creative peak occurs between these nocturnal hours. “You’re always more melancholic during those hours,” says front man Sam Bentley, “but if I could sum up the album it’s about what happens when selfishness and love collide.”
Featuring heavier use of synth, darker hooks, and a mellower timbre than we’ve seen on the quintet’s earlier EPs, twelvefour is accordingly laden with lush late night vibes – the perfect soundtrack for a Thursday evening. Listen for yourself – watch the Paper Kites perform twelvefour’s lead single, “Electric Indigo”:
Opening for the Paper Kites is folk-Americana duo Twin Bandit. Comparable to the Paper Kites’ earlier EPs, Twin Bandit’s Hannah Walker and Jamie Elliot weave together gentle vocal harmonies supported by driving drumbeats and dolorous pedal steel reminiscent of traditional country.
“There is something universal and timeless about folk music because it’s about life lessons like forgiveness, having your heart broken or finally falling in love,” says Hannah. But while Hannah writes from “inner struggle or darkness”, her vocal counterpart, Jamie, draws her inspiration from a sense of peace and optimism. The pair’s contrasting sources of inspiration play out in haunting harmonies that are as uplifting as they are melancholic.
